On the way through Yellowstone

We left Glacier on a beautiful day and stopped by the Hungry Horse Dam, because that's what vacations are really about, Dams and Fish Hatcheries.
This one you could drive over, so Tyler dropped us off on one side and we walked across.  This was fun for 5 minutes before my mother fears took over and I just wanted to get over before it collapsed or one of my kids were spontaniously sucked over the side.
We spent the day driving towards Yellowstone and stopped outside of Butte to camp and dry out all our stuff while there was sunlight.
It was an awsome place  and we pretty much had it to ourselves.

There was a stream that ran next to our spot but was through some tall weeds and so we didn't have to worry about Quinn wandering into it.
The girls caught a frog and played in the woods and had a grand old time.
Just before Yellowstone is a Graizzly Bear encounter place we have driven by 100 times.  We stopped and got to see some bear's up close.

The kids thought it was cool, but I'm thinking the didn't appreciate how cool it actually was.
We made it into the park and got the last camping spot at the Mamoth campground.  We set up the tent (which we were getting really good at) and went to explore the hotsprings.

I remember wanlking on the boardwalks when I was a kid and so it was fun watching my kids run up and down them, or sit and cry because they just wanted to be carried.
Actually it's backwards.  Alex begs to be carried and Quinn begs to be set free.
After days of camping in the rain and playing in the water, our clothes were all just soaked and dirty.  We had ment to find a laundromat but couldn't, so we ended up stopping at walmart and buying a new outfit for the girls, they were given esxplicit instructions that these clothes had to last at least 2 days, so not to ruin them.
Quinn knowns just how to get us to put her down.

This is by far the easiest way to hike with Quinn.
When we are setting up or breaking camp we usually lock Quinn in the car with the ipad.  Not sure how our parents did it, but the ipad sure saved us a few times!
The girls loved seeing the Elk in Mamoth and in general liked Yellowstone I think.
A much different kind of beautiful than Glacier.
One of the must stop places on our route was Sheepeater Cliffs.
This is one of my favorite places from my youth.
I remember climbing these with my Dad and watching the chipmunks and even seeing a porcupine once.
The girls climbed and climbed and laughed and loved it and it warmed my heart.
Fortunatly or unfortunatly, Quinn slept through the whole thing.
Heidi wanted a picture with me, it made me so happy.

Somehow Alex trained a chipmunk to follow her and obey whenever she clapped at it.
It followed her everywhere and would even do tricks.  Crazy.
We saw the obligatory Bison by the road.
And were able to convince the kids to get out of the car for the Great Prismatic Hot Spring.
I was suprised that you could see the color change so well from the ground.
As we walked through the steam it would go from hot to cold and it was pretty fun experiencing that with the kids.
A nice man offered to take our picture, the kids wern't so excited.
They played in the trees, walked on  logs and chased Quinn around while we waited for Old Faithful.
As the time grew closer Quinn did not want to cooperate.
So we gave her the Keys and enjoyed the blast.

The last of our must stop places was Isa Lake.  My Dad had written a story about Isa lake and we had been reading it in preparation to show the kids the actual lake.  It was devestated when we arrived to see it was shut down and there was construction going on so we couldn't see it!
We did get to see some of the other spots in the book and we camped that night at Lewis Lake and stopped by Lewis Falls the next morning.
